Many poker books advice on choosing the right casino game, with affordable limits and with many fishes or poor players. These same books also describe the importance of choosing a good position or seat at the poker table. With Texas Hold'em, such is particularly significant because this type of poker has fixed positions for all the players during a hand. According to such poker books, the person in the blind or next to the blind has a disadvantage while the player who acts last or makes the last bet is at a very advantageous position.

Unfortunately, following the advice on choosing the right game and the right position is difficult to do, especially when the poker player enters a famous casino on a Friday or Saturday night. Most poker tables are full. And when there is a vacant seat, the poker player will have no other choice but to take the open seat. Otherwise, he may end up not playing poker at all. And all his expenses of flying in and checking in a hotel just to play poker all go to nothing. In poker tournamenst, such situations are disastrous.

Therefore, choosing the ideal position is no longer considered important in real live poker. Such is the same in online poker. Luckily, online poker rooms have a wider range of choices than the land-based card rooms. Thus, the poker player may still have a chance to choose his poker game. But, in online poker, the player can reduce the disadvantage of having to bet first by having his own chart of poker odds taped beside the computer screen.

The poker player can also hold a paper and a pen to make notes of the games. The computer screen shows the exact number of active players, how much money each of his opponents has, and how much money is in the pot. He can always refer to his chart of odds in order to choose the right decision. All these cannot be done outside his private home.

Aside from this obvious advantage of online poker, there are more benefits in playing online. For example, the player cannot act out of turn since the computer will not recognize an act from a player whose turn is not up. The player cannot place string bets because, again, the computer will not allow such a move. Other players cannot accidentally or intentionally reveal their cards. All these are possible because the poker software is programmed to strictly implement the rules of the poker game.

And lastly, the poker player need not put up with the irritating smoke of other players at the poker table. Or, if the poker player smokes, he need not heed any complaint from other players or requests for him to move to another poker table.
